hôpital du Saint-Esprit
Built in 1204, the same year as the mother house in Dijon, on the initiative of the Duke of Burgundy, this hospital consisted of a chapel with a few beds, a kitchen, outbuildings and a piece of garden. Monks from Dijon came to run the hospital in Tonner, and a close relationship developed between the two institutions. It was sold as national property in 1791. All that remains of the original building is a partial ogive bay.
Presentation and history of Tonnerre
Tonnerre first appeared in Roman times as Tornodurum, meaning "fortress". For the Lingons, it was the capital of the Pagus tornodorensis. Here, in the Armançon valley, the County of Tonnerre was created, and served as a crossing point between Paris and Dijon, at a time when the King of France had designs on the Duchy of Burgundy.
