The Reliquary
This monument, erected in 1883, merits attention. Its upper part includes a lantern-shaped housing, sculpted with elaborate openings, which contains the ancient ciborium (eucharistic chest) of the church canons.
The ciborium was recovered at the end of the last century by the abbot Giraud on the site of the ancient oratory of Michomer, companion to Saint Germain l’Auxerrois, in a cave on the hillside near St Peter’s church.
The pedestal was sculpted by two stone cutters of the Tonnerrois, Auguste Mechin of Tonnerre and Clément Marcoux of Cry-sur-Armançon. It was meant to receive a reliquary bearing the remains of the patron saints of the Counts of Tonnerre, who are listed on the sides.
Présentation et Historique de Tonnerre
Tonnerre apparaît à l’époque romaine sous le nom de Tornodurum, « forteresse ». Pour les Lingons, elle était le capitale du Pagus tornodorensis. Ici, sur la vallée de l’Armançon, s’est créé le Comté de Tonnerre, qui a servi de point de passage entre Paris et Dijon, à l’époque où le roi de France avait des visées sur le duché de Bourgogne.
