Whether natural or man-made, the bief bordered the ancient town of Tonnerre, forming a protective belt around its walls. As the centuries went by, this defensive role was no longer the order of the day, and the bief was transformed into a nourishing wave, feeding the town's mills and giving the town the appearance of a little Venice.
Presentation and history of Tonnerre
Tonnerre first appeared in Roman times as Tornodurum, meaning "fortress". For the Lingons, it was the capital of the Pagus tornodorensis. Here, in the Armançon valley, the County of Tonnerre was created, and served as a crossing point between Paris and Dijon, at a time when the King of France had designs on the Duchy of Burgundy.
